KOLOA — Kaua‘i firefighters discovered the body of an elderly woman after battling a house fire early Sunday morning in Koloa, county officials said. The structure fire caused significant damage to the 1,200-square-foot wood, single-family home at 3748 Aloha Place.

The structure fire caused significant damage to the 1,200-square-foot wood, single-family home at 3748 Aloha Place. Officials said the blaze possibly led to the death of the woman, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The Kaua‘i Fire Department received the call at approximately 2:45 a.m. Units from the Koloa, Kalaheo and Lihu‘e stations responded. The fire was deemed under control at approximately 3:10 a.m., officials said.
When fire crews entered the structure the body of an elderly female was located.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the fire and police departments.
Officials said more information will be provided as it becomes available.
American Red Cross volunteers meet with the family and are ensuring their immediate emergency needs for food, shelter and clothing are met, a news release states.
Caseworkers will continue to follow up with those affected in the coming weeks to provide referrals, guidance or additional assistance as needed to help with the recovery process, the release states.
The Red Cross encourages all families to make a disaster plan to include an evacuation plan with two different routes of escape, a communications plan to help families reconnect after disaster and a disaster supplies kit that is readily available to aid in a quick evacuation.
