Noni Fruit Leather receives national recognition
Kaua‘i Noni Fruit Leather farmer Steve Fraily ha been chosen by AMD as one of three “foodie” business finalists to compete in the company’s VISIONary of the Year awards.
The award honors innovation in three “passion” categories: foodie, photography and entrepreneurship.
AMD “scoured the U.S. looking for innovators, building a pool of potential VISIONaries that our expert panel narrowed down to three special finalists in each category,” an AMD press release said
Nominees did not have to enter for a chance to win. They were chosen by the company based on unique offerings. Each finalist received a surprise phone call in late December 2010. Fraily said the call truly was a welcome surprise.
After naming the finalists, “AMD then took to the air and road, traveling the U.S. and filming each innovator in their every day environment, where they bring their magic to life,” the press release said.
Each story is showcased at www.amd.com/visionary. After watching each video, viewers may vote for AMD’s VISIONary of the Year.
To learn more about finalists, visit AMD VISIONary of the Year Facebook pages or the AMD VISIONary of the Year Twitter page.
When all the votes are tabulated, one winner in each category will be chosen to receive a grand prize of $20,000 and will be named AMD’s VISIONary of the Year.
Eligible voters can enter to win prizes, including a culinary trip to New York City (foodie category), a $4,000 technology shopping spree (entrepreneur category), a $4,000 camera (photographer category), as well as AMD’s $10,000 grand prize.

Leadership Kaua‘i seeks new executive director
Leadership Kaua‘i is asking for the community’s kokua in seeking out the next executive director to lead the program.
The organization is looking for candidates that are strong in the following areas: leadership qualities, non-profit experience, marketing and fundraising (including grant writing), connectedness to Kaua‘i, community involvement, leadership development programming, and Hawaiian cultural background.
A qualified candidate can expect to be offered an annual salary in the range of $45,000 to $65,000 depending on experience.
For more information, see The Garden Island’s classifieds section on Wednesday. All inquiries should be directed to Mark Hubbard at markhubbard@hawaiiantel.net or 639-4746.
Sherri Patrick was hired as executive director in March 2010.
She said, “Unfortunately, having returned to Hawai’i just 1 year ago after living in Southern California for 19 years, I feel I do not have the relationships and contacts necessary to secure enough financial support for our program. Operating and running the program with only two full-time positions also created limited time for me to develop those critical relationships.”
The board has accepted Patrick’s resignation, and she plans to step down from her position on July 1.

Sleeping Giant Sotheby’s achieves highest Kaua‘i RE sales volume
LIHU‘E — Hawai‘i Information Systems (HIS), which tracks real estate listings and data for Kaua‘i and the Big Island, said Sleeping Giant Sotheby’s International Realty recorded the highest sales volume among real estate agencies on Kaua‘i for 2010.
Totaling $48.5 million in sales, the year’s successful transactions centered on a broad price range of homes, condominiums and raw land. Throughout the year, Sleeping Giant closed escrow on 30 different properties ranging in price from just under $50,000 to over $20 million. The largest sale was for a 2,000-acre parcel of land located in Kealia.
“In a year marked by foreclosures, short sales, greatly diminished property values and a tough lending climate, I’m ecstatic that we have come out on top in sales on Kaua‘i,” said Debra Blachowiak, principal broker for the agency.
HIS said median sales prices for existing homes on Kaua‘i decreased in 2010. The year also saw a sharp increase in foreclosures and auctions. Blachowiak points to these trends contributing to increases in home and condo sales volume last year.
In December, there was a 21 percent increase in Kaua‘i home sales and a 37 percent increase in Kaua‘i condo sales, compared to December 2009.
