NAWILIWILI — Bonjolea finished third overall, but corrected to first place in the Nawiliwili Yacht Club’s first Offshore race of 2011, Saturday.
The X-342, usually with Bonnie Tiffany at the wheel, finished the 10-mile course on a 1:19:56 elapsed sail through blustery winds, but corrected to 1:16:52 PHRF, just 13 seconds ahead of Speedy.
“This was a skipper’s choice race,” said Sharon Gibson, the NYC Race Committee starter, in an email. “The skippers met at the NYC Clubhouse and selected Z buoy, a Fish Aggregate Device, located more than five miles offshore.”
Speedy, one of two Olson 30s in the race, slipped through the wind and chop to finish first overall on a 1:16:58 sail but corrected to 1:17:05 PHRF for second place.
Fast Company, the other Olson 30 who captured the title of the Shakedown Series in tight competition, Thursday, crossed second overall on a 1:17:28 elapsed sail but corrected to 1:17:35 PHRF, just 30 seconds back of Speedy.
“Only three boats competed in the blustery winds that blew 20-25 knots out of the East-northeast,” Gibson said. “It was fast, wet and lumpy out there with the boats finishing very close to each other in just over an hour for the 10-mile round-trip.”
The NYC will open its Pete Peterson Memorial Rum Race Series, Thursday, when the first flags fly at 5 p.m.
The public is invited to view the competition from the jetty wall area of the Nawiliwili Harbor at no charge.
