Hale ‘Opio Kaua‘i has presented the Kaua’i Historical Society with a copy of Ka Leo O’ Koloa, a publication from Hale ‘Opio’s art program in the mid-‘80s, a news release states.
Printed by AMFAC, the project honors Kaua‘i’s South Shore landmarks and community treasures of the twentieth century.
John Shklov, Hale ‘Opio’s art instructor at the time, agreed with the students that getting to know more about their new community would help them feel more at home.
Together they decided what areas and people were representative of the Koloa District, the release states.
They developed interview questions and toured historic sites, documenting the process in film, which they developed and printed. With John’s guidance, students gained interviewing skills and created the layout for the publication.
The caves at Kiahuna Golf Course are discussed by archaeologist William Kikuchi; the shoreline features of Maha‘ulepu are captured in film and commentary with noted educator David Boynton; Eric “Iki” Moir and Hartwell K. Blake Sr. talk story about old Koloa; and a morning at Donovan’s Break is illuminated by our own surfing Queen, Margo Oberg.
The Kaua’i Historical Society is accessed on the Big Save side of the Historic County Building. Mary Requilman, the KHS Executive Director, welcomes you to peruse their latest acquisition.
