As you may already know, I have many nationalities in my blood. It explains why I love many different types of food. There are days I need to fulfill my Italian side, so I bring my family to Bobby V’s in Waipouli, across from Foodland. A quiet, cozy restaurant during lunch time is just the place for me and my three kids. It’s a family-oriented establishment and more than just another pizzeria.
As I got to Bobby V’s, my kids were excited and ready to eat. You know what that means: loud demands for food by the two older kids, a crying baby who wants to touch everything and a stressed-out look on this single mother’s face. But I am a trooper. My mission is to feed them and get a piece of Italy for myself in the process. With crayons and two sheets of white paper from the friendly staff, the two older kids went from level-seven noise down to one in a matter of seconds; two down and one to go.
“Now how will I keep baby happy?” I thought. Then server Cindee came to the rescue with fresh garlic bread for baby to nibble on. “Wow, the staff has my back,” I thought to myself.
As you look around, you can see the red bricks over the counter that lead your eyes to the oven where all the magic happens. And right over the bricks was a flat screen TV that ran Italian programming.
Now, down to business. First up, checking out their menu. As the kids got to drawing, I took a moment to browse through the offereings. I ordered a Greek salad made with kalamata olives, red onion and pepperoncini, topped with feta cheese. For the whole family, I ordered my favorite appetizer, the spinach and artichoke dip served hot in a fresh sourdough bread bowl. Can you say “yum?”
As we started to settle in, the waitress helped another group of local customers with their order. The couple brought their own bottle of wine; the waitress opened it up sans corkage fee for them to drink with their pizza. Aside from that perk, the waitress handed them a kama’aina card and explained to them as she did me that you get ten percent off of all food and beverages, except for alcohol. I felt appreciated, and it kind of reminded me of Dave and Busters on O‘ahu with that plastic card they give you to keep track of your points. In any case, it felt like I was in a family-oriented yet sophisticated restaurant. As time flew past, more customers came in. I could see the famous pizzas flying out the door quickly, and I could see why. Everything on each pizza was so fresh; I wouldn’t be surprised if Bobby V’s had a garden in the back.
After the main dishes, it was time for the special dessert: the one and only “Cannoli” Bobby V’s offering is a traditional Italian cannoli that gave my sweet tooth a run for its money. It was filled with cream and what seemed to be pieces of chocolate chips. I didn’t ask what the cream filling was made of because at that moment it didn’t matter — it was that good. My focus was strictly on indulging.
