LIHU‘E — Tyler Oshima of the Lihu‘e Mustang Yankees laced a triple in the fourth inning and scored on a Ricky Rego RBI single, Friday morning at the Lihu‘e County Park.
That run tied the game 8-8 against the Aiea Orioles as the Yankees came back from an 8-4 deficit.
Robin Dumlao pushed Rego home on another RBI single and the Yankees chalked up a 9-8 win in one of the opening games for the Lihu‘e Baseball League’s 7th Annual Da Bash.
Across the way, the Bronco Yankees, also from the host LBL organization, got the home-town crowd roused en route to their 11-2 edge over Extreme, a team from the Ewa Beach area of O‘ahu.
Cory Gokan, chair of the 7th Annual Da Bash, said there are 32 teams participating in the baseball tournament, which opened Friday and runs through Monday afternoon.
“We have 32 teams here and there are teams on the wait list,” Gokan said. “Next year, we’ll see if we can make it bigger.”
Originally, Gokan and his committee of organizers had planned to hold games at three fields, and for this year, initiate night games.
However, due to the staggered arrival of the participating teams, games are scheduled for just the Lihu‘e County Park and Isenberg Park. The night games have been replaced with a movie night.
Another new feature is the expanded store headed by Maile Cox and offering a large variety of Da Bash logowear as well as sunglasses, folding chairs and other baseball paraphernalia.
The Bronco field features a lineup of teams which span the island as there are teams from the Westside, Kapa‘a and Koloa joining the host Lihu‘e teams.
Gokan said pool play for both the Mustang and Bronco divisions will continue through Monday morning when the semifinals take place, followed by the championship games starting at noon.
There is no admission fee to view the tournament action.
