The public is invited to the free 7th Biannual Community Seed and Plant Exchange, which will be held Sunday at Na Keiki O ka Aina in the Kaua‘i Village Shopping Center.
This free event is a place for people of diverse backgrounds to come together and share plants which they have grown in the form of seeds, seedlings, cuttings, slips, root divisions, huli, keiki, or established plants, states a release from Regenerations Botanical Garden and Kaua‘i Community Seed Bank.
The event allows people to talk about plants, whether it’s a favorite flower, a tomato which does well in local climes, an unusual chili pepper, or the best papaya.
No plant material will be sold. Instead, they are given freely, or traded amidst an atmosphere of live music, food available from Papaya’s Natural Foods, and information tables.
Lisa Fuller of One Song Farm in Moloa‘a will be offering a presentation of “From the ground up, a farmer’s view on growing island-adapted seed.”
Check-in of plant material starts at noon with the seed and plant exchange starting following a group blessing scheduled for approximately 2 p.m. Fuller’s presentation will follow the exchange at about 3:30 p.m.
People bringing plant material to share will be asked to fill out labels identifying the type of plant and favorable growing conditions. Contact information is optional.
Plants should be pre-cleaned, pest-free, GMO-free and non-invasive.
Everyone is encouraged to attend because there will be lots to learn and receive, the release states.
The seed and plant exchange is a joint event of Regenerations Botanical Garden and Kaua‘i Community Seed Bank, GMO free Kaua‘i and Na Keiki O Ka Aina.
