LIHU‘E — Injuries and finances kept the Indiana Crush out of Kaua‘i, Monday.
Jason Engelman was the sole Crush player to take the field, surrounded by a hoarde of Kaua‘i Cowboys anxious for some action.
“We suffered some injuries in our game against Honolulu, Saturday, and also had some financial issues,” Engleman said. “We really wanted to come, but we’ll make it up to Coach Al Ah Loo.”
Koko Kaneali‘i, doing the microphone duties, said the Indiana Crush lost to the O‘ahu team 38-18 and in the process sustained injuries which prevented the entire team to show up.
The Crush are attempting to help children from the Japan disaster by raising funds through the game of football in a ministry program, Kaneali‘i said.
“There are about 100,000 orphaned children in Japan right now,” Engleman said. “We’re trying to help them.”
Instead of a regular football game, fans who enjoyed the food and special concert were treated to a controlled scrimmage where Engleman was invited to take the field with the Cowboys instead of against them, the lone Crush player taking on various duties, including quarterback and lineman.
Kaneali‘i said the Kaua‘i Cowboys who took the field are the new edition of the team and part of the Hawai‘i Football League, which is scheduled to start play during the winter months.
He added the Kaua‘i Cowboys are looking for players who want to play football and invites interested people to join the practices which take place at the Peter Rayno Sr. Park in Hanama‘ulu.
In addition to the Kaua‘i Cowboys, there is a Lihu‘e Crusaders team, Kaneali‘i said.
“We look forward to playing with them here,” Kaneali‘i said.
