NUKOLI‘I — Eight scholarships were awarded to Kaua‘i students during the Contractors Association of Kaua‘i general membership meeting, Thursday night at the Kaua‘i Beach Resort.
Mark Guirao, a three-time CAK scholarship recipient, was presented a $1,000 award from The Gas Company. Guirao, the son of Nida and Avelino Guirao of Hanapepe, is a senior honor student at California Polytechnic State University in Pomona majoring in Electrical Engineering. Following graduation in the spring of 2012, Guirao will be commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army and branch into the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers.
Shaun Koide of Lihu‘e and Laszlo Whitfield of Ha‘ena were both recipients of $1,000 awards from the Payton Bryan-Chung Memorial Scholarship program.
Koide, the son of Eliza and Miles Koide, will be a sophomore Electrical Engineering major at the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.
Lazlo, the son of Alicia Whitfield, is a 2011 Kapa‘a High School graduate and will pursue a Facilities Engineering Technology major at the Kaua‘i Community College this fall.
Lyle Nemeth, a 2011 Kaua‘i High School graduate and co-valedictorian, will be a freshman Civil Engineering major at the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.
The son of Lora and Victor Nemeth of Lihu‘e, he was the recipient of a $1,000 Clyde Shigematsu Memorial Scholarship.
Kevin Macadangdang of Koloa was presented a $1,000 scholarship which will be utilized in his studies as a freshman Mechanical Engineering major at Oregon State University in Corvalis. Macadangdang, a 2011 Kaua‘i High School graduate, is the son of Filomena and Moises Macadangdang.
Nicholas Leota, the son of Tara Leota of Kalaheo, was the recipient of a $1,000 award from the Guy Matsunaga Scholarship program. A 2011 graduate of the Kamehameha Schools, Kapalama campus, Leota will be a freshman at Texas Christian University majoring in Civil Engineering.
KistiAnne Nishek of Hanapepe and Raynard Ellis, Jr. of Hanapepe were both recipients of $1,000 Yasuo and Hisae Minatoya scholarships.
Successful applicants of this scholarship must have completed at least two years of college and do not need to be majoring in a construction-related field of study.
Nishek, the daughter of Jerry and Laura Nishek of Kaua‘i Nursery and Landscaping, has been accepted into the University of Hawai‘i Hilo School of Pharmacy and is on schedule to graduate in 2015. She currently carries a 3.8 grade point average.
Ellis, Jr., the son of Janice and Raynard Ellis, Sr., the island manager of RSI/Rosa’s Supply, is a graduate of Kamehameha Schools, Kapalama campus and is a senior in the Shidler School of Business at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa.
He carries a double major in Finance and Accounting and has a 4.0 grade point average in both majors and is scheduled to graduate in the spring of 2012.
The CAK was established in 1957 as a trade association of licensed contractors, suppliers and businesses affiliated with the construction industry on Kaua‘i.
