LIHU‘E — Francis Mission just completed his mission last month.
The journey of filling the “State Series of Quarters” was a project he decided he would do back in 1999 when his wife needed a liver transplant and went to San Fancisco, Calif. for the surgery.
“Every time he went to the store, he would look at all the coins,” his wife said, smiling in the background of the security tent at the Kaua‘i Hospice “Concert in the Sky,” Monday, where Francis was one of the security corps. “Some of the coins were really hard to get and he waited a long time to be able to fill the hole.”
But Mission said he was able, over time, to fill in all the holes except for the Northern Marianas Islands.
“There weren’t any Marianas Islands, anywhere,” Francis said. “I kept looking and looking, but nothing.”
Finally, he received the missing coin from a cousin on the Mainland, completing his project which started almost 12 years ago.
“If it wasn’t for the Mainland, I would probably still be looking,” Francis said. “Now, it’s complete!”
