KALAHEO — The JAMZ Cheer Camp wrapped up on Sunday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center where about 65 pepsters representing the five different KPWFL associations were participating.
Yvonne Hosaka, the Westcon cheer coordinator of which the Hawai‘i program is a part of, said the cheer camp was a good opportunity for people interested in cheer to come and see what the program entails because of the high level of instruction provided by the Jamz crew.
Specially selected instructors from the Jamz Traveling Squad worked with the aspiring cheerleaders through various stunting, jumping and cheer routines under the supervision of the different coaches who attended the program with their cheerleaders.
The camp comes on the heels of a successful coaches’ clinic held at the Elsie Wilcox Elementary School cafeteria where both cheer and football coaches gathered for the USA Football program.
“The Kaua‘i Pop Warner season doesn’t start until August 1,” Tasha Daligcon, Pop Warner cheer coordinator said. “Every association starts on that date with practice. Up until then, if people are interested, they can still sign up.”
During the clinic, the Jamz instructors were liberal in distributing special ribbons which cheerleaders wore in their hair and clothes, the ribbons symbolizing achievements in the various aspects of cheer.
Tennille Halemanu is the president of the KPWFL, Millie Ah Hee is the Scholarship chair, Cassie Camara is the league secretary, Daligcon is the league’s cheer coordinator, Renee Gaspar is the league treasurer and Teddy Arroyo is the league commissioner.
Hosaka and Mel Rapozo, the former commissioner, are the Westcon representatives.
