Hilario Salsedo Sr.
Hilario “Pineapple” Salsedo Sr. died Sept. 20, 2011. He was born on May 4, 1929, in Kealia, Kaua‘i.
His parents were Paulina and Antonio Salsedo of Puerto Rico. He lived in Hayward, Calif., for over 50 years where he raised his family. He served in the U.S. National Guard for approximately three years. As a young man, he was a boxer and horseman. He was employed as a machinist with United Can in Hayward for 36 years where he was given the nickname, “Pineapple.” He retired in 1991. Later in life, he enjoyed fishing, photography and riding motorcycles with his family and friends. He was a great Puerto Rican dancer, long-time member of the P.R.U.M.A. club and he embraced his Hawaiian culture and music. He touched so many lives and will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father; his brothers, Manuel, Joe, Cinto, Carl, and Richard; and his sisters, Helen, Margie, Margaret and Nina.
He is survived by his daughter, Priscilla Salsedo Rio of Fairfield; and sons, Hilario Salsedo Jr. of Redding and Michael Salsedo of Hayward; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Santos of Sacramento; two brothers, Anthony Salsedo of Fremont and George Salsedo of Elk Grove; along with many extended family members who loved him dearly.
His memorial service will be held at Holy Angels, Sorenson Mortuary, 1140 B Street, Hayward, Calif., on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 1:30 p.m. A celebration of life reception will follow at P.R.U.M.A Hall, 616 “E” Street, Union City, Calif.
