Kaua‘i Backstory, an online literary journal, announced its sixth annual creative competition. This year’s theme is “The Coconut Wireless” and is sponsored by the Garden Island Arts Council, according to a press release. The deadline to enter is Sept. 30, and award-winning author Jocelyn Fujii was named this year’s guest judge.
Cash prizes, ranging from $25 to $100, will be awarded, the release states. Winners and other noteworthy contributors will be posted online at www.kauaibackstory.com, and the winners will be invited to read during a November celebration.
Submissions can be in the form of an essay, story (fiction or nonfiction), memoir or poems, and visual entries must be submitted in .jpg format, according to the release. Entries must be relevant to Kaua‘i, in some manner.
“Kaua‘i Backstory is a venue for rigorous writing with a view about Kaua‘i,” says the release. “We look for writing that builds understanding, not walls. We encourage writing and imagery that engenders respectful dialogue for we believe one way to build community is through conversation.”
The deadline to submit entries is midnight Sept. 30. All entries must be emailed to kauaibackstory@gmail.com and pasted into the body of an email (no attachments).
