Living the country life, Kaua‘i residents sure know how to throw down the barbecue. The parties and cookouts at the beach or backyard at a friend’s house have you hanging over until the crazy work week. Then you get caught up in your work, school and other projects, leaving you no time to party anymore. Then after a while, out of nowhere you start to get the craving for some smoky homemade ribs, but by then you are too tired to clean the grill. That is exactly how I felt this past weekend. Well, if you ever felt like me, I have the perfect solution. Drive down to Da Booze Shop BBQ & Grill in Waimea Town with family & friends and get your grill on.
Just a a short walk from the Waimea Post office, you will find this hidden treasure next to the laundry mat. When you step in, you can smell the spices and smoky flavors in the air. If you were expecting beer or any type of alcohol due to their name, you will be surprised to find there is none. Like their slogan states, “Where Da Grinds Had Outsell Da Beer.” According to one of the workers, Lisa Brun, “We no longer serve cigarettes or alcohol no more, now we are known for our barbecue dishes.” As you look at the menu, you can get the barbecue chicken or smoke ribs or do what I did and get both by ordering the combo.
As you look around you can see the proud hunting pictures, so imagine after a long day up in Koke‘e, you bet you can find groups of hunters getting their barbecue on here at Da Booze Shop. Still not quite sure what you want to order? Let me introduce you to some dishes on their menu. First we have the barbecue specials like my chicken and ribs combo. A local favorite, the box lunch — filled with rice, teri beef, hash patty, luncheon meat, fried chicken and hot dog — is great to take to the beach or up to Waimea Canyon. Plate lunches include chicken katsu, chicken cutlet and others. But on Sundays, since it’s football season, I recommend the wing ding plate lunch.
Feeling like eating something different? Try the Oriental fish wrap, which includes your choice of salad and sweet potato fries. For all you healthy eaters, they have your back too, with dishes like Oriental chicken salad or barbecue chicken salad made with their very own barbecue vinaigrette dressing. And rest assured, all dishes are made to order, so you don’t have to worry about freshness.
