LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i Police Department officers on Wednesday arrested a Calif. male suspected to have robbed on Wednesday an American Savings Bank in Lihu‘e, according to a county press release.
“Over 20 officers from all three KPD bureaus worked relentlessly over the course of the past two days,” KPD Assistant Chief Roy Asher said in the release.
KPD officers took David Verden Williams Jr., 35, of Sacramento, Calif., into custody Wednesday at about 6:18 p.m. at St. Regis Princeville Resort.
Through tips received from the public and the cooperation of the hotel’s staff, police identified and located the suspect after he checked in at the North Shore resort Wednesday afternoon.
Officers apprehended Williams without incident and recovered a large sum of cash from his room and belongings. He was transported to the police cellblock in Lihu‘e, where he remains in lieu of $100,000 bail.
Williams is scheduled to appear in court Monday.
The Rice Street robbery occurred at about 1:10 p.m. Wednesday when a male walked into American Savings Bank, passed a note to the teller demanding money and pointed an unknown object at her from under his shirt, according to the release. The robber then fled the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash.
After the incident, police disseminated surveillance photos and a description of the robber to local media.
“We would like to thank the community for their assistance,” Asher said. “With their help, we were able to bring this man to justice in a relatively short period of time.”
The county said normally federal law enforcement agencies investigate crimes that occur at financial institutions; however, Kaua‘i has no on-island federal law enforcement presence. KPD, therefore, handled the investigation.
