LIHU‘E — Just 10 and 11 points separated the Kaua‘i High School air riflery teams from the Waimea High School teams, Wednesday at the Red Raiders’ range.
The Kaua‘i girls, led by Kristyn Yamamotoya and Delissa Nobriga, accumulated 1,115 points, edging past Waimea girls by 11 points, Jackie Taylor posting the highest score of the day at 242 towards Waimea’s 1,104 points.
On the other side of the range, Kaua‘i’s Reyn Morioka posted the best score of the day to lead Kaua‘i to an 1,130-1,120 win over Waimea, a margin of just 10 points.
Kapa‘a, hosting Island School at its range, split its series, Island School boys winning 1,100-983 over Kapa‘a’s boys and the Warrior wahine posting a 1,015-330 win over Island School.
“Things are getting very interesting in the boys’ race,” said Douglas Nobriga, Delissa’s father and a former air riflery coach for Kaua‘i. “The girls are pretty much done. They’re just shooting for individual averages, now.”
Kaua‘i boys and Waimea boys both sport one loss apiece through the season with two matches remaining, including Wednesday’s meet when Kaua‘i travels to Island School and Waimea hosts Kapa‘a at the Hanapepe Armory.
Then there is the “rained-out” match at Island School which will be made up today when Kaua‘i starts a two-day shoot-a-thon by making up the match before resuming the schedule, Wednesday.
Following Morioka’s lead (90-71-79-240), Kaua‘i boys got solid performances from Micah Chung (83-68-79-230), Matthew Kawamura (81-65-79-225), Colby Ihara-Takase (85-60-76-221) and Matthew Manipon (69-71-74-214).
Waimea got its lead from John Medeiros (91-67-80-238) who finished just two points below Morioka despite posting the best prone position score at 91. He was followed by Kristopher Toma (83-68-80-231), Austin Kunishige (83-60-82-225) and Jaron Parongao (83-62-79-224).
Island School boys, in its win over Kapa‘a, got a strong showing from Cole Moore who posted a 229 (86-81-62) followed by Marcus Punua (88-77-59-224), Daniel Miller (86-74-62-222), David Caminos (88-71-59-218) and Micah Kimi (89-63-55-207).
Kapa‘a’s only 200-point shooter was Kalani Murakami who led the squad with a 232 (91-76-65), tying Waimea’s Medeiros for high-point honors in the prone position at 91. Adam Clark (82-57-58-197) and Justin Pasadava (60-70-63-193) followed.
Jackie Taylor posted the day’s high 242 for the girls, including a high 72 in the standing and 86 in the kneeling positions, but Waimea came up 10 points short.
Taylor was followed by Nikki Acoba (92-67-71-230) posting the day’s high in the prone position at 92, Rachel Umetsu (85-65-77-227), Alexys Burmudez (86-57-79-222) and Lia Shigematsu (61-52-70-183).
Yamamotoya posted a 231 (91-54-79) and Delissa posted a 229 (87-65-77) to lead the Red Raiders followed by Sara Koide (91-54-79-224), Jamie McDermott (79-58-81-218) and Marissa Chun (83-61-69-213).
Marissa Goo set the pace for the Kapa‘a girls with a 228 (83-74-71) followed by Kaylyn Armstrong (83-67-63-213), Mary Walker (75-66-62-203), Alison Yamamoto (73-64-50-187) and Shyanne Almazar (65-63-56-184).
Allison Culliney (71-62-40-173) and Franny Kimi (73-54-30-157) posted scores for the Island School girls.
