There are seven days of the week. We all can make some great homemade dishes. Living on Kaua‘i, we all know how blessed we are to eat a diverse selections of food. But we also know that sometimes we want something fresh, something we can bring to the beach or eat while watching some college football. Of course we have to have it our way, but we don’t want to eat at the usual burger joints. Where can one fulfill this mission? Well, it’s a famous franchise: Subway, which Waimea Town is blessed to have in its community.
“Eat fresh.” We’ve all heard that famous slogan. Do we eat fresh consistently? To be honest, if you are born here and raised on Spam musubi, Vienna sausage, bento box lunches and beef stew, as a local I will have to say “nope.” Our slogan should be “eat heavy.” But, luckily for us, we have our wonderful farmers’ markets and restaurant options like Subway to help us balance out our nutrition needs. I am guilty of my loco mocos and other ono heavy dishes; but when I want a great sandwich done my way, I head over to Subway in Waimea.
As you take a look around, you see all the meats, veggies and condiments for your choosing. Since it is October, I thought I’d try one of the footlong specials.
“You may choose any foot long sandwich for six dollars,” said Subway sandwich artist Kamanu Kinny. Of course, I like to eat fresh and yet heavy, so I ordered the famous feast sandwich. The feast comes with all the cold-cut meats you desire, including salami and pepperoni, topped with your choice of veggies. But if you are a seafood lover, try the seafood sensation, made out of fresh krab and your choice of veggies.
Subway sandwiches are the perfect on-the-go sandwich that you want to take with you to Polihale or up top to Koke‘e to feel the cool mountain air. But, like most football fans, something about a club sandwich in one hand and some chips in the other just fits when cheering on your favorite team. They do catering to for school or office functions. If you call ahead of time, you can get all your office orders in and just pick them up when they are ready.
Although other Subway franchises had to close due to being affiliated with Big Save, the Subway in Waimea is still open.
“This Subway is privately owned by Wendell H. Nunes Sr., so we are lucky to still have our jobs,” said Kinny. I was grateful for that, because living on the Westside has an effect on our gas prices, and I like the convenience of having a Subway here in Waimea.
As you look at the menu, you will be informed of other great meals, nutrition plans and what’s great for kids. They also have salads, wraps, and soups, if you want to switch it up. If you got a sweet tooth like me, no worries. They got a cookie rack stocked with chocolate chip and white chocolate macadamia.
