Kaua‘i Sings helps Kaua‘i United Way

LIHU‘E — D.Q. Jackson, the Malama Pono executive director, last week presented a check to Ron Wiley, the Kaua‘i United Way co-chair, and Scott Giarman and Lynnette Medrano-Stine, representing the KUW.

The check represents proceeds from Malama Pono’s recent Kaua‘i Sings concert, Jackson said.

“During the core of the Kaua‘i United Way Annual Campaign in September and October, Malama Pono splits proceeds, 50-50, with Kaua‘i United Way in a show of support for the work they do on behalf of our entire community,” Jackson said.

Giarman said the Kaua‘i United Way is proud to have Malama Pono as one of its Participating Agencies for many years.

“It is most gratifying that D.Q. Jackson, the board and staff of Malama Pono so enthusiastically support our work to provide funding for their vital work as well as that of our 27 other social service agencies,” Giarman said.

Malama Pono Health Services is Kaua‘i’s HIV, infectious hepatitis and STD prevention program, offering no-cost anonymous and confidential infectious disease screening, counseling and referral.

The work being done by Malama Pono Health Services has reduced the incidence of new HIV infections to one case on Kaua‘i in the last three years.

Kaua‘i United Way is Kaua‘i’s umbrella charitable organization. One contribution helps the whole island with all money raised on Kaua‘i remaining on Kaua‘i, Giarman said.
