LIHU‘E — The Garden Island newspaper and the Zonta Club of Kaua‘i are teaming up again this year and asking the community to help make the holidays happier for less-fortunate residents through The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund.
From now through Christmas Eve, The Garden Island will share stories of families who could use a little holiday cheer along with an appeal for monetary donations of any size.
The names have been changed to protect their privacy. Funds raised will be distributed to needy families by Zonta Club members, who purchase gift certificates at appropriate businesses to help make these simple wishes come true.
Because of logistical limitations, only monetary donations can be accepted. Checks made payable to Zonta Club of Kaua‘i Foundation can be mailed to P.O. Box 3032, Lihu‘e, HI 96766. Mr. Clark could use good tidings
Mr. Clark is 87 years old and totally bed bound as a result of a stroke he suffered several years ago. Mrs. Clark has become his full time caregiver. At 84 years old she also has health conditions that present a great challenge in her care giving responsibilities.
Mr. Clark needs extensive assistance for bathing and has a feeding tube in place. This elderly couple lives on a limited monthly income and depends on their children to assist with doctor appointments and shopping. Good tidings will surely be appreciated by Mr. & Mrs. Clark.
Mrs. Grant needs kindness
Mrs. Grant is 80 years old and a full-time caregiver for her spouse who is 87 years old. Due to a heart condition, frailty and diabetes Mr. Grant is challenged when it comes to caring for himself. They have 3 children that assist with daily/household chores when needed, but the bulk of Mr. Grant’s care falls upon his spouse. Any act of kindness will bring warmth to their hearts.
Mrs. Roberts would like holiday cheers
Mrs. Ellen Roberts is 85 years old and lives alone in an elderly housing complex on a fixed monthly income. Mrs. Roberts fell in her bathroom and remained on the floor for 2 days before help arrived. She remained in the hospital for 6 weeks with low oxygen levels and has no family here to assist with her daily activities. Holiday cheers will surely brighten Mrs. Robert’s recovery.
Elderly couple could use new shoes
Sara and John are a couple in their late 60’s who have fallen on hard times. Both have recently been diagnosed with some serious health issues, which are potentially life threatening if not treated properly. After paying for rent, utilities and food sometimes there is not enough left over for all their medications and there certainly isn’t anything left over for non-essentials. Sara and John could both use some new shoes and clothing.
