Free programs for youngsters ages 7 through 12 are available through a new keiki sports program coordinated by Kalapaki Joe’s.
The new program which launched on Nov. 7, allows children the opportunity to participate in Jiu-Jitsu classes or free surf lessons for six months.
Monday, youngsters met at Kaua‘i Technical Institute led by Pono Pananganan for the first of their weekly sessions and on Wednesday, more youngsters converged at Kama‘aina Surf and Sport across from the Harbor Mall shopping center for their first surf lessons.
“It is amazing to partner with two thriving local businesses on this venture to provide an outlet for our island’s keiki,” said Jody Valente, owner of Kalapaki Joe’s. “Kalapaki Joe’s has always supported local Kaua‘i athletes, and under the Kalapaki Joe’s Keiki Program, our island’s youth will have an opportunity to participate in popular island sports with positive and motivating mentors.”
Pananganan and KTI was started in the various garages of his teammates in November, 2004 and over the years, has grown and flourished through the support of the Kaua‘i community, states a Kalapaki Joe’s release.
Kama‘aina Surf and Sport is locally owned and operated, striving to bring quality products and services to the people of Kaua‘i. Two avid surfers and watermen came together to create the full service shop for their core ocean supplies.
Kalapaki Joe’s, with locations at the Harbor Mall in Nawiliwili and in Po‘ipu, is a gathering place to watch sports, including the NFL games, UFC fights, University of Hawai‘i football, and more through its network of television sets with volume controls enabling customers to watch their favorite game along with other highlighted matches at the same time.
The Kalapaki Joe’s bar features the largest beer selection on the island while providing a great menu for children and adults.
