I applaud Bishop Carl Harris and Pastor Joe Hunkin for their lawsuit brought against the state regarding civil unions. They are bringing to light the damage these unions can do.
It is an assault on our religious liberties, our traditional families and traditional marriage as we know it. These three institutions made our society strong. However, right now there are homosexual activists working hard to destroy these foundations.
I encourage more pastors, churches and everyone who still believes in our traditional values to speak out.

Big box stores
Kmart and Sears have announced that they will be closing some of their stores. Could it be that people just don’t buy enough of the items sold there because items are cheaply made elsewhere other than the U.S. and priced too high for consumers to afford?
On another note, regarding one of The Garden Island front page stories, “Aloha ‘oe 2011: Year in business” published Dec. 31, could it be that most of these businesses’ prices were to high for island people to afford? It seem like a lot of these small businesses around the island want to get rich over night.
Their items are priced for tourists, who are here to spend money. But some of the tourists walk away, too, from these places of business because the prices are outrageously expensive.
As for our mom-and-pop store that was sold, they remained for a long time because they understood the local lifestyle and the need for groceries. So their prices were affordable until about two to three years ago, when their prices went sky high and the economy was — and still is — going down hill.
These businesses that are now starting up should learn from mistakes and keep their prices low and affordable, yet charge enough to make a small profit for themselves. It’s we who live on the island who will be supporting your businesses year-round. Don’t try to get rich overnight.

Outrage over shark article
To say The Garden Island front-page article “Kalaheo man snags shark at Nawiliwili” published Dec. 29 disappointed me, regarding the senseless killing of a shark, would be barely demonstrating my outrage.
What were you thinking publishing that article? It is not news. It is somebody bragging. What about fact-finding?
No keiki are in danger of getting their arms bit off. It is illegal to swim in that area. What about the morality of publishing newsworthy information? We all know there are sharks in the harbor. We have all seen them. We also know that reef sharks are not a threat to humans.
How do the Hawaiians feel about calling their aumakua “monsters”? Shame on you, TGI, for publishing such garbage.
