LIHU‘E — The Kapa‘a girls Junior Varsity soccer team broke open for four second-half goals to take a 5-0 win over Waimea, Thursday at Vidinha Stadium.
Taylor Kaneakua, playing midfield, set the pace for the junior Warriors, taking a header from Madisson Hinkel who, in turn, tried to nail the goal on a corner kick from Alanna Bauman, playing the right wing in the 48th minute.
Earlier, Haylei Sheldon found the net for the 1-0 halftime lead.
Kaneakua’s second goal, coming in the 50th minute, was a bit more straight-forward, the forward taking a short pass from midfielder Megan Devin and nailing the shot in the left pocket.
Kaylee Silva highlighted the Warrior speed on the field, outrunning the Menehune defender who had control of the ball and sweeping the ball for a quick shot that rolled under the legs of the Menehune goalkeeper in the 58th minute.
Kaiemi Moniz, who along with the wings, provided good ball movement for the Warriors, iced the victory with a shot of her own, a booming kick that sailed over the Waimea defense from about 40 yards out and settled into the folds at the 62nd minute for the final goal.
Two was the magic number for Kaua‘i JV’s Joni Hashizume who sports the number 2 on her jersey. Hashizume, scored two goals in Kaua‘i’s 2-0 edge over the Island School Voyagers at the Island School complex.
Kaua‘i, playing with coach Karl Ubongen at the helm, worked to control the ball, keeping it in Voyager territory for most of the first half before Hashizume broke the 0-0 deadlock.
Kaua‘i will host Kapa‘a at Vidinha Stadium, Saturday with the JV game kicking off at 10 a.m. followed by the varsity match starting at 11:45 a.m. Waimea travels to the Island School campus in a single JV girls exhibition match starting at 10 a.m.
Monday, the boys soccer program opens its Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation season when the JV Menehune travel to Vidinha Stadium for a match against Kaua‘i High School starting at 4 p.m.
