Commodore Larry Richardson of Boy Scouts of America Sea Scouting, Aloha Council, announced the selection of Lila Detreaux as Western Region Boatswain’s Mate for the Sea Scouts.
Parker Smith of San Rafael, Calif., was named Western Region Sea Scout Boatswain, according to the Sea Scouts website. The officers’ terms will run from Jan. 1 until May 31, 2013.
“As Western Region Boatswain’s Mate, Lila will function as an assistant to the Western Region Boatswain,” Richardson said.
“This makes her Sea Scouting’s No. 2 youth leader in the entire Western Region of the Boy Scouts of America. Her responsibilities include assisting the Western Region Boatswain with leadership and representation of the Sea Scout youth in the Western Region,” he said.
The Western Region covers Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawai‘i, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. The region also covers parts of Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota and Texas, as well as the countries of Japan, the Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand, according to the website.
Currently a junior at Island School, Detreaux started the program as Kaua‘i Ship’s Boatswain and was promoted to Aloha Council (state) Boatswain before being promoted to her new position, Richardson said.
She hopes to continue up the ladder, possibly becoming Sea Scouting’s National Boatswain someday.
Detreaux is about 70 percent on her way, states the Sea Scouts website. During her tenure as a Sea Scout, she has served as Ship Boatswain and Council Boatswain and helped in organizing the first-ever “Safety in Hawai‘i” program. She has a 3.8 grade point average and is the current vice president of her school’s Spanish Club.
“I am extremely proud, and I think our entire island community should be proud of how one of our own Kaua‘i Sea Scouts has been able to move up the ranks and make such a big impact in our country’s Sea Scout program,” Richardson said. “It is an outstanding achievement by an outstanding youth.”
The Kaua‘i Sea Scout program was chartered by the Kaua‘i Police Activities League and the SSS Decisive, the Aloha Council ship. The program started operations in June 2009, skippered by Richardson, an SSS Albatross alumnus.
The Decisive is a traditional type of Sea Scout unit and is named after the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter named Decisive, according to the Sea Scouts’ US website.
