KE‘E — Lifeguards revived a male hiker Thursday morning after he suffered an apparent heart attack on the Kalalau Trail, states a county press release.
The 61-year-old man had just begun his hike at 9 a.m. when he became distressed and called for assistance.
Three lifeguards from the Ke‘e Beach tower responded to the call and quickly located the hiker just past the start of the trail. Shortly after escorting him back to the trail head, the man went into cardiac arrest.
Lifeguards administered CPR and used an Automated External Defibrillator to deliver a single shock to the man’s heart, which revived him.
By the time firefighters and medics arrived on scene, the man had regained consciousness and appeared to be in fair condition.
Medics transported the man to Wilcox Memorial Hospital for further treatment.
