The Kaua‘i County Parks and Recreation Department on Tuesday began pumping storm water that accumulated in the Po‘ipu Beach parking lot, the department stated in a news release. The work was being monitored by the state Department of Health, which Monday issued a brown water advisory, urging residents to stay away from flood waters and storm water runoff. The advisory was still in effect Tuesday, according to the agency’s website.
The state Department of Transportation reported Tuesday that a partially collapsed drainage culvert beneath a section of Kuhio Highway near Kilauea forced workers to post signs modifying traffic patterns, although two-way traffic on the two-lane highway remained open.
A culvert 15 feet in diameter suffered a partial collapse during the weekend rains. The state agency said updated information about road repairs likely will be available by Friday.
