Three Kaua‘i high school seniors are among 30 nominees to U.S. military service academies for the Class of 2016.
The students were nominated by U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawai‘i, and the announcement made at a ceremony on O‘ahu.
Kameron Perez of Lihu‘e, currently a student at the Kapalama campus of Kamehameha Schools, was nominated to the Air Force Academy, one of the four military service academies.
Kristel Guino and Christina-Maile Pico, both students at Kapa‘a High School, were nominated for the Military Academy at West Point.
The students’ applications are now being considered by the academies for final selection, states a news release from Hirono’s office.
Members of Congress each year submit their nominations to the four service academies. Each academy’s director of admissions selects from the submitted lists of nominees on the basis of scholastic achievement, leadership experience, school involvement, athletic and extra-curricular activities, community contributions and volunteer or employment experiences.
