LIHU‘E — The male subject found dead of a gunshot wound following an armed robbery in Hanalei in January has been identified, a Kaua‘i Police Department spokeswoman said Monday. Police identified the body of Robert Hatcher, 50, of Bremerton, Wash.
LIHU‘E — The male subject found dead of a gunshot wound following an armed robbery in Hanalei in January has been identified, a Kaua‘i Police Department spokeswoman said Monday.
Police identified the body of Robert Hatcher, 50, of Bremerton, Wash. According to the autopsy, Hatcher died from a gunshot wound.
The wound is believed to be self-inflicted, the spokesperson said.
Hatcher was discovered dead inside a stolen vehicle on Jan. 19 near the Church of the Pacific in Princeville.
The vehicle belonged to an 82-year-old Hanalei man who was robbed at gunpoint Jan. 18. The victim said the suspect tied him to a chair before taking his money and car, but the victim later freed himself, according to his account to The Garden Island.
According to police, Hatcher had recently moved to Kaua‘i and was living in the ‘Anini Beach area. Without relatives on the island, police attempted to identify him through a database search of fingerprints and dental records.
The identity of the man was not officially verified until an immediate family member flew to Kaua‘i last week and was able to confirm the dead man’s identity.
