LIHU‘E — Owners of transient vacation rental properties, also known as TVRs, will now have to pay commercial rates for county trash collection services, the county Public Works Department reported Wednesday.
Owners were sent letters this week that said TVRs will no longer be eligible for trash pick-up under the Residential Refuse Collection Assessment ordinance. Owners must decide how to manage their trash by May 15, a Public Works news release states.
The new rules come under County Ordinance 905, which makes TVRs subject to commercial rates.
Options include applying for a county commercial refuse account by May 15, for which the monthly fee for the weekly service is $84.
Or, they can self-haul their waste to the nearest refuse transfer station. This will require the purchase of tipping fee coupons for $10 for a half-ton load or $20 for a three-quarter-ton load, according to the county. A third option is to apply for dumpster service from a private hauler.
Trash collection at TVR units where the owners have not applied for a county commercial account by the May 15 deadline will cease on July 1, when refuse bins will be collected, the county states.
