When he’s not playing his guitar, he’s surfing and caring for the environment.
No wonder not a single seat was left vacant during Jack Johnson’s April 19 concert at Kaua‘i Community College Performing Arts Center.
The concert — aptly titled “An Acoustic Evening with Jack Johnson” — capped off the college’s Earth Day festivities, and marked the beginning of the eco-minded musician’s sold-out, seven-date tour of Hawai‘i.
A benefit for Johnson’s Kokua Hawai‘i Foundation, the three-hour concert featured Johnson’s friends and North Shore neighbors, Paula Fuga and John Cruz.
The songstress performed songs from her her albums “Lilikoi” and “Misery’s End.”
John Cruz gave a sneak peak at some music he is working on for his next album, which will include a track with Jack Johnson.
Then Jack Johnson sauntered onto the stage. Dressed in a T-shirt, faded jeans and rubber slippers, the singer/songwriter performed a set list sprinkled with love songs and his radio hits.
Johnson built an intimate connection with the audience, taking shouted requests and providing insight about the background on a few of the songs he written.
Johnson later brought the two singers on stage with loud whoops of approval from the audience. By the time the group performed “Banana Pancakes,” audience members were feeling the love. Johnson said he will come back to Kaua‘i, and next time he will bring the band.
