Save the world much?

How many of you have ever dreamed of saving the world? Dreamed of being a superhero? Dave Lizewski does just that in the 2010 super hero comedy “Kick-Ass.”

The 2010 super hero film “Kick-Ass” is based on the comic book by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. The film is directed by Matthew Vaughn and was first released on April 16, 2010. “Kick-Ass” tells the story of a teenage comic book geek, Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson), who one day sets out on a new adventure to become a superhero.

As the film starts, Dave ponders the question of being a superhero and tells himself, “I always wondered why none did it before me. I mean, all those comic books, movies, TV shows…you think that one eccentric loner would’ve made himself a costume. I mean, is everyday life really so exciting? Are schools and offices so thrilling that I’m the only one who fantasized about this? Come on, be honest with yourself, at some point in our lives we all wanna be a superhero.”

With a little help from Google, Dave finds himself a superhero costume online and buys it with a click of his index finger and the help of his nifty credit card. Within a few days, Dave’s superhero costume arrives in the mail and his adventure begins as he names himself Kick-Ass. Kick-Ass slowly tries to build up his strength and skills of how to be a superhero, first by making Kick-Ass his very own MySpace page. Kick-Ass is no hero until he comes across a few bullies picking on a some guys. Kick-Ass in costume approaches the fight and does what he is made for: he gets the bullies to back down. However, the bullies then turn on Kick-Ass and leave him bruised and bloody. The ambulance takes Kick-Ass to the hospital and after getting fixed up, he makes his way home as Dave, keeping the costume a secret.

When Dave returns home he feels like a job well done, despite the beating. Dave logs on to Kick-Ass’ MySpace and finds out that the whole fight was recorded by a bystander and is being broadcast all over the world, turning Kick-Ass into a celebrity. Kick-Ass now has something to look up to, and grows an eager passion for adventure and crime fighting.

However, being a superhero isn’t easy, as Dave gets tangled up in a bigger fight when he meets Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage), a former cop, who dreams of bringing down the drug lord Frank D’Amico (Mark Strong) for framing him as a drug dealer, which led to the suicide of his wife.

Big Daddy has trained his 11-year-old daughter for years how to fight and how to defend herself, naming her Hit-Girl (Chloë Moretz).  Big Daddy and Hit-Girl have been plotting revenge against Frank D’Amico and his team for a long time on their own. Now Kick-Ass wants in, as he is drawn into the adventure.

Frank gets suspicious of a murder by Big Daddy and blames Kick-Ass. Frank’s son, Chris (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), comes up with an idea about how to get to Kick-Ass. Chris assumes the role of Red Mist and befriends Kick-Ass. Little does Kick-Ass know he is about to be lured into a trap that will leave him fighting for his life.

Does Kick-Ass have what it takes to make it and win against big-time drug lord Frank D’Amico and his team? Are Big Daddy and Hit-Girl skilled enough to finish their plan? Will Kick-Ass lose his life for a superhero dream?

“Kick-Ass” is rated R for brutal violence and strong language and has a running time of 117 minutes. I highly recommend this movie for everyone ages 16 and up.

 It isn’t the typical super- hero movie that the boys beg for but girls despise. “Kick-Ass” is a movie for everyone, it has romance and comedy for girls and action and adventure for boys. “Kick-Ass” has my rating of 8.5 out of 10 stars and is available to stream on Netflix, or pick up a Blu-Ray or DVD copy. If you enjoy this movie, there is talk about a “Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall” movie coming to theaters in 2013.
