LIHU‘E – In an effort to raise awareness about Earth Day, which falls on April 22, the county’s Staff Level Green Team is sponsoring a photo contest, the Kaua‘i County Office of Economic Development reports.
Digital photos depicting memorable Earth Day activities are eligible.
Entries should include a brief description of how the photo relates to Earth Day, along with contact information such as a name and telephone number. Photos must be emailed to sblane@kauai.gov by Friday, April 27.
The top three photos will be featured on the county’s Facebook page, and also will be entered in a drawing for bus passes valued at $25 (one month) to $240 (12 months).
The primary mission of the Staff Level Green Team is to improve the county’s resource management that will result in cost-savings and reduce the county’s carbon footprint, the county states in a news release.
Earth Day was founded in 1970 by Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. senator from Wisconsin, after witnessing the ravages of a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, Calif. Soon afterward, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency was created.
This year’s theme is “One Billion Acts of Green.”
Other Earth Day activities scheduled on Kaua’i include Kaua’i Community College’s fourth annual Earth Day Celebration from noon until 6 p.m. on April 26.
