Alethea Fernandes
Alethea Hoakalei Crowell Fernandes, “Grams,” passed away at her home in Lihu‘e on April 12, 2012, at the age of 76. She was born in Waimea, Kaua‘i, on August 8, 1935, and was a retired special education teacher.
She is preceded in death by her husband, James S. Fernandes and parents, Edwin and Keikilani Crowell.
She is survived by her sons; Christopher (Marty) Fernandes and Donald Fernandes, her daughters; Julie (Darryl) Chong and Penny Kawelu Fernandes, five grandchildren; Kainoa (Kady) Fernandes, Kahoku (Jennifer) Simeona, Evan Simeona, Kyrie Simeona , Cherisse (David) Medeiros; four great-grandchildren; Jeremiah Fukushima-Fernandes, Hayden Domingcil, Kylee Simeona, Lylah Fernandes, her brothers; William (Leimomi) Crowell and Oliver (Sally) Crowell, and nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Her Life will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 28, at Koloa Borthwick Mortuary with visitation at 9 a.m. Refreshments to follow. Arrangements for scattering her ashes will be announced at the service.
Benjamin Alamani
Benjamin “Ben” Alamani, 63, of Salem, Ore., passed away on March 20, 2012, at Salem Hospital. He was born in Waimea and resided in Anahola until 1999. He was a retired craftsman.
He is survived by his wife Linda S. Alamani, daughters: Becky (Henry Jr) Kanoho, Cheri (Rawlin Kanoho) Alamani, grandchildren: Hana Kanoho, Henry Kanoho III, Raelyn Kanoho, Ben Kanoho, Darcie Kanoho, Anu Kanoho, Ikaika Kanoho and David Kanoho, sister Jane Gray, and numerous other family members.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, July 21, at St. Catherine Church with visitation from 9 a.m. and services at 10:30 a.m.

Edwin Fu Sr.
Edwin Kwai Meng “Ah Meng” Kiilau Fu Sr. of Hanalei, Kaua‘i, passed away at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on April 8, 2012, at the age of 84. He was born in Hanalei on December 10, 1927. He was a ranch foreman at Princeville Ranch (AMFAC).
He is preceded in death by parents, Lung Shak and Phoebe Fu; wife, Clara Fu; daughter, Charleen Kinney; sisters, Helen Hitchcock, Lillian Mundon, Emma Cummings; brothers, Harry and Lono Fu.
He is survived by sons, Wendall (Joanna) Fu, Kilauea and Edwin (Aleta) Fu, Jr., Kapa‘a; daughters, Edleen Kaui, Kapa‘a, Claradeen Fu, Hanalei, Helena Giltner, Wailua, Marleen (Iiams) Fu, Hanalei; companion, Linda Yadao, Kilauea; brother, Charlie Fu Sr.,Hanapepe; sisters, Hattie Baptiste, Florida, Ah Oui Pacheco, Oahu, Ah Lan (Naha), Kaneakua, O‘ahu, 22 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, April 21, at the old Hanalei Canoe Clubhouse at 10:30 a.m. Casual attire is suggested.

Pedro Rivera
Pedro Ramoran Rivera of Lihu‘e, died April 2, 2012, at Garden Isle Health Care at the age of 91. He was born on July 24, 1920 in Bacarra, Ilocos Norte, Philippines. He retired from the Lihu‘e Sugar Plantation.
He is preceded in death by his parents Guillermo and Luisa Rivera; brothers, Leon Cadavona, Eulalio Rivera, sabino Rivera; and sisters, Agapita Cadavona, Telesfora Rivera, and Veneranda Rivera.
He is survived by his wife, Salud Galapon Rivera; daughter Erlinda R. (Alberto) Salvador of Hanamaulu; son Norberto A. (Brigitte) Rivera of Wailua Homesteads; grandchildren Allyne (Lyle) Pagatpatan of Honolulu, Lorna (Benjamin) Probasco, Artemio (maricel) Rivera, and Duane Rivera of Lihu‘e; great-grandchildren, Ashten and Landen Pagatpatan, Blake and Lorin Probasco, Mason and Matthew Rivera, and Sean Castilleja; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Thursday, April 19 at the Immaculate Conception Church. Visitation from 8:45a.m. to 9:45a.m. Mass at 10:00a.m. Casual attire.

Kanao Asaoka
Kanao Asaoka of Lihu‘e, Kaua‘i, passed away on April 6, 2012, at the age of 88 at Wilcox Memorial Hospital. Born on September 28, 1923 in Lihu‘e, Kaua‘i, he was a veterans counselor for the Veterans Office, State of Hawaii.
He was preceded in death by parents, Sueyoshi & Tochiko Asaoka; and wife, Patsy Asaoka.
He is survived by daughters, Trudy (David) Merchant, Iris (Clayton) Faria, Ardis (Michael) Ueki; son, Mark Asaoka; sister, Mitsuko Niwa; 11 grandchildren and11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life is on Saturday, April 28, at Lihu‘e Hongwanji Mission with service at 4 p.m. Family suggest flowers be omitted and casual attire.

Mariano Castillo
Mariano Castillo of ‘Ele‘ele, Kaua‘i, passed away on April 7, 2012, at Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital at the age of 95. Born on Sept. 10, 1916, in the Philippines, he was a retired equipment operator.
He is survived by his two sons, Romy (Kaui) Castillo and Orlino (Lydia) Castillo; two daughters, Mary (Tom) Duncanson and Terry (Dave) Jones; 10 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were celebrated on Tuesday, April 17, at Borthwick Mortuary Chapel in Koloa.
Danny Alayvilla
Danny Valmoja Alayvilla of Lihu‘e died at Straub Clinic and Hospital on April 6, 2012, at the age of 49. He was born on Feb. 3, 1963, retired from the County of Kaua‘i and was the entrepreneur of Danny’s Concrete Pumping & Bobcat Service.
He is survived by his daughter, Danielle Alayvilla; son, Micah Alayvilla; parents, Ernesto and Veronica Alayvilla; three sisters, Regina (Cris) Alayvilla-Schenck, Fely (Roger) Akama, Mila (Kyle Cremer) Alayvilla; two brothers, Alfonso (Belinda) Alayvilla and Eddie Alayvilla; one granddaughter, Autumn Alayvilla; friend, Susan Kashiwabara and children, Tyler and Sarah; numerous aunties, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, April 28, at St. Raphael’s Church in Koloa with viewing from 8 a.m. and Mass celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will be held at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens.
Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home assisted the Alayvilla family with arrangements.
Judith King
Judith “Hoodie” Wilcox King passed away on March 11, 2012, in Aiken, S.C., at the age of 67. She was born on March 27, 1944, in Lihu‘e, Kaua‘i.
She is survived by her sons, Mark I. Bryan and Michael C. Bryan Jr.; daughters, Deborah B. Chow and Sherry K. Niethammer; 11 grandchildren and her sister Pamela W. Dohrman.
