Eileen Bolin
Eileen Fumiko Bolin,67, of Longview, Wash. died April 15, 2012 at Kaiser Sunnyside Hospital in Clackamas, Ore. She was born August 6, 1944 in Waimea, Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i to Tamotsu “Tom” Okura and Harue (Wataru) Okura.
After growing up in Hanapepe, Eileen moved to the mainland for college and to start her teaching career. She was a graduate of Oregon College of Education in Monmouth, Ore. Eileen was an elementary school teacher in Kelso, Wash. before moving to ‘Aiea, O‘ahu with her husband Mike. Upon returning to Longview in 1979, Eileen went back to Kelso School District as a substitute teacher for many years. After being a sub, she was an adult basic education instructor for Lower Columbia College. Eileen opened a bookstore, The Benevolent Bookworm, in 1991. The bookstore closed in 2001. Books were her chief pastime. She loved to read and thrived on sharing the joy of reading with everyone, especially children.
Eileen was a person like none other. There are few words that can capture the quality of her character. She was generous in all aspects of her life. As a mother and wife, Eileen managed to be kind, nurturing and supportive without smothering the spirits of her family. Eileen captivated nearly everyone she met, whether they were close friends or merely passing acquaintances. She was always quick to laugh and her smile lit up everyone who saw it. Above all, Eileen had a teacher’s heart. She delighted in sharing her knowledge whenever the opportunity presented itself. Even though she never considered herself a dog person, Eileen had a special bond with her granddoggie Jasper and enjoyed the company of granddoggie Kita.
Eileen is survived by her husband, Mike, of Longview; her son Scott Bolin, of Bellevue, Wash.; her daughter Courtney Bolin-Walker and son-in-law Scott Walker, of Bothell, Wash; her brother Wendell Okura, of Hanapepe; nieces Sarah Okura and Melia Okura; and nephew Tom Okura.
Eileen was preceded in death by her father, Tamotsu “Tom” Okura; her mother, Harue (Wataru) Okura; and her brother, Thomas Okura.
A private service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at the Waimea Hongwanji Temple. Aloha attire suggested.
