KOKE‘E – A blessing was held last week to mark the start of the Koke‘e Road enhancement project.
Approximately 4.3 miles of the roadway will be resurfaced from the bridge at the “hairpin” turn on Koke‘e Road to the Waimea Canyon Drive junction.
The scope of work also includes reconstruction of the weakened pavement areas; cold plane; shoulder stabilization; culvert repair; and installation of concrete swales, guardrails, striping, reflectors and signs.
Grace Pacific Corp. was awarded a $4.3 million contract for the Koke‘e Road project, which is expected to be completed at the end of September.
“I’d like to acknowledge the Public Works Department, especially the Engineering Division, for their efforts on the Koke‘e Road project,” said Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr.
“They have saved the county and ultimately taxpayers thousands of dollars by handling the design work and construction management in-house.”
The mayor also noted that a project information document (PID) with detailed information has been developed and is housed in a shared folder, which can be accessed and updated by everyone involved in the roadway project.
Paving Koke‘e Road is one of 38 projects that are part of the mayor’s Holo Holo 2020 vision for Kaua’i. The vision calls for all organizations, businesses, residents and visitors on Kaua’i to be part of creating an island that is sustainable, values the native culture, has a thriving and healthy economy, cares for all – keiki to kupuna – and has a responsible and user-friendly local government.
