LIHU‘E — “We’re making a big splash into an ‘Endless Summer,’” said Ann Akama of the Friends of the Lihu‘e Public Library Wednesday.
Akama and a bunch of volunteers from Friends of the Lihu‘e Public Library were busy uncrating books and setting up tables for the used book sale which starts Friday and continues through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days in the Lihu‘e Library conference room.
“This is a big summer slash sale where everything is priced at one dollar each,” Akama said. “But there’s more. For every five books purchased, one is free.”
Carolyn Larson, branch manager at the Lihu‘e Public Library, said the fun-loving volunteers are promoting the fundraiser on an “Endless Summer” theme, so beach wear won’t be turned away.
The used book sale offers a perfect kickoff to the summer reading programs offered by the state library system from June 4 through July 7.
Participants who visit their local library and read at least one book a week are eligible to receive a free weekly reading incentive while supplies last, states a release from the Hawai‘i State Library.
“The Friends will be splashing into summer with all kinds of books and media for children, teens and adults — all at rock bottom prices,” Larson said in an email. “There are more books than ever. Picture books, cookbooks, travel books, art books, money books. History and self-help, sports entertainment, pets, health, science, religion, philosophy, and fiction of every genre. Whether you are a paperbacker or a hardbacker, there will be books — mystery, romance, western, adventure, fantasy, or literature and classics.”
Larson said during the two days, shoppers should look out for some “outrageous book specials.”
The used book sale is a fundraiser put on three times a year by the Friends of the Lihu‘e Public Library to raise money to support the programs and services at the library, and in addition to book sales, contributions are encouraged.
