Kimberly Aguilar receives Gertrude Ekvall Smith Memorial Scholarship

KALAHEO — Kimberly Aguilar, a 2012 Waimea High School graduate, was named the recipient of the $1,500 Gertrude Ekvall Smith Memorial Scholarship at the Kalaheo Missionary Church Sunday Worship Service on May 20. She is the daughter of Victor and Priscilla Aguilar of Kalaheo.

The award is presented annually to a graduating high school senior who is bound for a Christian college or university and who is an active member of one of the Missionary Churches on Kaua‘i.

The selection was based on character, Christian service, academics, and financial need. Kimberly attends Kalaheo Missionary Church.

“I’ve always known Kimberly to be a well balanced individual, balancing school, work, and play in a mature and disciplined manner,” states RuthAnn Silva, Youth Director at Kalaheo Missionary Church.

Kimberly plans to attend Hardin-Simmons, a Christian university in Texas. She chose Hardin-Simmons because the university offers the major she wants and will help her grow in her Christian faith. She also feels Hardin-Simmons will offer great opportunities to study abroad and to help others in need while receiving a quality education.

Kimberly loves working with kids and serving God, so her career goals are to become an occupational therapist helping children with physical disabilities have an easier life as well as to become a short term missionary.

Gertrude Ekvall Smith was an active member of the Koloa Missionary Church and an avid believer in the importance of education. After her death, her son, Ray Smith, set up the scholarship in her name as a memorial to her.

The objective of the scholarship is to provide financial encouragement for members of the Missionary Churches of Kaua‘i to attend an accredited Christian college or university so they can become well-trained Christian leaders of tomorrow.
