AUSTIN, Texas — After four days of competition, the Sperry Top-Sider/ICSA Women’s National Championship wrapped up on Saturday at Lake Travis outside Austin, Texas with the University of Hawai’i Rainbow Wahine sailing team placing 15th. Boston College claimed the regatta title in a narrow race between the top four squads.
The competitors arrived to nice breeze and partly cloudy skies on Saturday morning, a welcome change from the first three days of racing when wind was often scarce. Winds came in from the south-southeast at around 12-14 knots at the start of the morning and fluctuated between 8-12 knots much of the day.
A total of 14 races were completed on the day—seven each in both the A and B divisions—completing the championship with 26 total heats. The Rainbow Wahine, stood in 15th at the conclusion of each of the last two days and that’s where they would end after the final races completed.
UH totaled 302 points—153 in the A division and 149 in the B division. Sailing for the Rainbow Wahine were Madeline Kennedy, Lani Johnson, Lindsay Stewart, Hanne Nagatani and Bree Nidds.
It was the highest finish in the championship in four years for the Rainbow Wahine who were making their 13th nationals appearance in the last 15 years.
