The Surfrider Foundation, Kaua‘i Chapter will be hosting a beach cleanup on June 23 in celebration of the 8th annual International Surfing Day.
“International Surfing Day is observed globally on June 20, but we will do our beach cleanup on June 23,” said Sheri Saari Saturday during the World Oceans Day Fair in Hanapepe where she was working with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. “It’s the same day as the Mayor-a-thon at the Kapa‘a Beach Park, and people can come over the Kealia Beach once the Mayor-a-thon is over and celebrate International Surfing Day. It’s all on the same side of the island.”
International Surfing Day celebrates the sport of surfing and helps raise awareness about issues facing the planet’s oceans, waves and beaches, states a flier Saari had at the World Oceans Day Fair.
The June 23 beach cleanup is described a s a super beach cleanup fish net patrol and pa‘ina sponsored by Deja Vu Surf, The Coconut Cup, Papaya’s Natural Foods, Mermaids Cafe, Bubba’s Burgers, Starbucks and Tamba Surf Co.
The County of Kaua‘i Department of Parks and Recreation will assist with hauling rubbish resulting from the cleanup. Surfrider also extended its appreciation to the Kealia Surf Festival for allowing it to partner with the Kealia Surf Festival.
“Surfrider’s Hawai‘i Chapters host beach cleanups throughout the year, but these events on International Surfing Day are usually our biggest and best,” said Stuart Coleman, the Hawai‘i coordinator, in the flier. “It’s a great day to celebrate the water sports we love and help clean up our beach playgrounds.”
Surfers Kelly Slater, 11-time world champion, and Stephanie Gilmore, four-time women’s world champion, are this year’s International Surfing Day ambassadors, according to the Surfrider flier.
“We’re extremely excited to have both Stephanie and Kelly on board as this year’s International Surfing Day ambassadors,” said Matt McClain, Surfrider Foundation’s director of marketing and communications.
“Their positive influence as surfing and environmental role models do so many youths aligns perfectly with the goals of International Surfing Day and we hope their involvement helps us reach a wider audience.”
