LIHU‘E — Lanes of traffic on Kuhio Highway — beginning at the Hanama‘ulu junction of the Kapule Highway intersection and continuing north for a quarter mile — will be shifted mauka effective Tuesday for roadwork on the makai side.
All lanes of traffic will remain open, according to Bow Construction Management.
The lane configuration should be in place for a month and a half, pending weather delays, with construction from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, except holidays.
The speed limit in this zone will be 25 mph. during construction time, with morning contra-flow ending near the construction zone.
The work is part of a $2.4 million Hawai‘i Department of Transportation project to widen lanes of traffic to 12 feet. It will also widen shoulders from 4 to 8 feet, improve drainage, install new lighting, repave and stripe the road.
The construction also will modernize traffic signals to be timed with signals along the Eastside.
The contractor is Jas. W. Glover Ltd. The project should be completed in approximately four months depending on weather.
The Hawai‘i DOT said it would appreciate the public’s patience while these improvements are made. Drivers are encouraged to allow for extra time and drive safely through the construction zones.
