On June 5, the Kaua‘i Community College Physical Science Department set up an outdoor classroom and observatory at Russian Fort Elizabeth in Waimea to view Venus as it passed between the Earth and the sun.
KCC instructor Michael Hannawald coordinated the event, stating “the Venus transit won’t happen again until the year 2117.”
People from all over the world, curious locals and die-hard science enthusiasts were on hand to observe this historic moment in time.
The outdoor classroom provided invaluable information and historical significance of the astronomical anomaly, catering to normal Joe as well as seasoned astronomers.
The KCC-PSD observed the transit from 12:10 p.m. until sunset at 6:44 p.m.
