PO‘IPU — Car enthusiasts gathered more than 79 pounds of food and raised more than $100 to benefit the Hawai‘i Foodbank, Kaua‘i Branch during a recent car show.
The show’s theme was “Under the Stars,” and it was hosted by King’s Chapel and Cathedral at The Shops at Kukui‘ula parking lot on Nov. 16.
Limited by the parking lot lights, people did not stay away as they browsed through the amber-lit parking lot, which was coned off to show off vehicles ranging from vintage cars to hot rods and a pair of new model cars from King Auto Center.
Pastor Steve Franks and Edward Batara, event coordinator, said they appreciated all of the people who turned out and supported the Hawai‘i Foodbank, Kaua‘i Branch.
John Medeiros of Lawa‘i earned Best in Show honors with his Metal Flake Green Meyes Manx Dune Buggy, which attracted a lot of attention with his set up.
Bobby Barros, the president of the Garden Isle Racing Association, teamed with Kerri Villa to earn Best Motor award for their ’56 Chevy.
Barros also teamed with Auto Stylin’ & Performance to contribute cash prizes for the car show winners, states a King’s Chapel news release. PMS, Pauly and Laplane Valmoja contributed the trophies, which accompanied the cash awards.
James Agcaoili of Koloa earned Best Interior for his work on a Volkswagen, and Howie Pedro of Kapa‘a earned the second Best Motor award for an El Camino with a big block Chevy engine. Some of the other participants included Rodney Ventura with his Baby Blue Dune Buggy, Coosy Camillo and a ’69 Road Runner, Cory Paden and his Model A, Michael Acoba with a ’66 Volkswagen, Dennis Bonilla and his 1914 Buick, Jason Ubongen with his ’91 Honda Accord, Scott Topp with his 1930 Model A Tudor, Jeff Vegas Sr. with his ’65 Chevy Nova, Chris Paden with his Chevy Camaro, Keith Tammarine with his ’79 Avanti and David Nobriga Jr. with his ’59 Chevy pickup truck. Richard Rasay and A.M.R. Sound provided sounds and disco lights.
