Protecting our keiki
Like many of us who heard the tragic news, I am deeply saddened by the recent drowning of a 3-year-old on Kaua‘i. To the parents, I offer my deepest condolences for your incalculable loss.
Our keiki need to be protected. As a former lifeguard and for the past several years, a U.S. Coast Guard auxiliarist and vice president of the Kaua‘i Lifeguard Association, it has been my mission to promote water safety at the beach and on boats.
To parents, kupuna, guardians and everyone who watches over toddlers, I recommend the following Rules for Water Safety: 1. Learn to swim; 2. Swim near a lifeguard; 3. Swim with adult supervision; 4. Swim with a buddy; 5. Call for help if your buddy is missing; 6. Obey all posted warning signs; and 7. Keiki who ride in boats must wear a properly fitting life jacket at all times on or near the water.
With constant vigilance and review of these simple rules with your keiki, needless tragedies can be prevented. Let’s all work together and share the responsibility for the mitigation of the risk of drowning. Our keiki are precious and need protection.

Let’s ban dirty kitchens
The dirty kitchen: have you ever heard of it?
First of all let me tell you what a dirty kitchen is. It’s a homemade kitchen outside of the house where they cook and hang out all hours of the night. And that’s the problem.
There must be some kind of amendment made to ban making a dirty kitchen. Maybe then I can get a good night’s sleep.
What do you think?

Treat yourself to laughs at ‘Odd Couple’
Unaccustomed as I am to public pronouncements, since this is a time of the year when we (excepting Scrooge) would wish for a jolly time to be had by one and all, I take my pen in hand to further this happy thought by highly recommending an evening with “The Odd Couple, female version” by Neil Simon, which has only two more performances scheduled at the Aston Aloha Beach Hotel this coming Friday (Dec. 14) and Saturday (Dec. 15).
I enjoyed a performance of this play this past weekend, and I can report that the audience was almost as entertaining as the actors: who can resist general merriment and delighted laughter all around them?
May I even suggest that your august self might, just for one evening, desert Clio and embrace Thalia? By this, I do not mean the automobile made by Renault, but embrace the comedy rather than history … I should have left you to look it up in Wikipedia, but it is the season of generosity!
With all good humor,

Shame on thugs who robbed theater
I am saddened by the thoughtless thugs who vandalized and robbed the Kukui Grove Cinema.
Ms. Blair: This is a small island, and they will be caught. You took every security precaution available.
I recently moved to the island, and told my mom what a bargain the shows were compared to Orange County where I came from.
I for one, and my mom, so appreciate that you have kept the shows affordable for all the people of Kaua‘i.
Also, please hang in there and fight Regency Theatres from coming. We will support you! We don’t want all the “mom and pop” businesses on Kaua‘i to fold.

Stop illegal rental activity in Moloa’a Bay
Despite multiple calls to Kaua’i County alerting them of the many out-of-state owners who are renting houses at Moloa’a Bay without the proper TVR permits, this activity continues unchecked. Just go to www.vrbo.com and quickly one can verify that there are more houses for rent at Moloa’a Bay (22) than permits issued.
How long are we going to let these out-of-towners abuse our ‘aina, and show no respect for the laws of Kaua’i?
Let’s demand the mayors office to take immediate action, and stop this illegal activity at one of our precious beaches.
