LIHU‘E — Funding educational trips always takes a great deal of work to cover expenses.
Students in the Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School Media Productions class are hosting a Street Fair tomorrow night from 5 to 8 p.m. on the school campus, 4431 Nuhou St., in Lihu‘e.
The class is raising funds for their trip to the 2013 Student Television Network National Convention in Los Angeles.
“It’s a four-day convention with breakouts with industry pros,” said Kevin Matsunaga, who teaches the Media Productions Class at Chiefess Kamakahelei.
His students have also won several awards in recent years at competitions held at the convention.
It costs $1,200 for each student to attend, which covers their airfare, hotel, ground transportation and admissions to activities.
The class is trying to raise half of that via fundraisers such as a breakfast and a golf tournament.
“The amount of work you do, the more benefit you get,” Matsunaga said of how much money covers each student.
This is the fourth time the school has operated the Street Fair as a fundraiser for different activities for students. This is the final fundraiser for the media studies class trip.
The evening will feature food trucks in the bus lane and other vendors in the cafeteria.
To make the evening especially family-friendly, there will also be face-painting and games. In addition, bingo will be offered starting at 6 p.m.
Food vendors include JC’s Puerto Rican Kitchen, Hanalei Taro and Juice Wagon and Yamato’s Ice Cream among others. Several crafters will have handmade items for sale in the cafeteria.
Matsunaga said vendors are still welcome to contact him to join the Street Fair if they already have food permits.
The fair will collect a percentage of the gross sales or a booth fee, “whatever they hit first,” Matsunaga said.
He said craft vendors are more than welcome to still join the fair.
