Volunteers are needed for a beach clean up Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the South Lydgate Beach, Kamalani Bridge, and beaches south toward the Wailua Golf Course.
Surfrider Foundation, Kaua‘i Chapter, is organizing the beach cleanup because recent high surf and tides have brought in a large amount of marine debris, primarily plastic and derelict fishing nets.
“Surfrider Foundation would like to remove these so it does not go back into the ocean where it can be a threat to marine life,” said Robert Zelchovsky, in a Surfrider release. “There is also a large derelict fishing net which we will remove.”
Norm Hunter, a water safety supervisor with the Kaua‘i Ocean Safety Bureau, last week confirmed the washing up of plastics, noting one of the regular users of Lydgate Park showed him a bag filled with plastic pieces picked up from the South Lydgate area.
Dr. Monty Downs of the Kaua‘i Lifeguard Association said he found a buoy while on one of his morning outings to Lydgate Park last week as well.
“I don’t know what I’m going to do with this, but I’m sure someone can find a use for it,” he said, showing off the black plastic buoy which he stowed in his truck parked at the Lydgate parking lot.
“I found this near the South Lydgate restroom facility.”
Volunteers can meet up with Surfrider leaders at South Kamalani Park near the Kamalani Bridge. Signs will be posted for directions.
Surfrider will provide gloves, bags and tools.
Volunteers are asked to bring water, a hat and sunscreen.
