LIHU‘E – The head of a community initiative for youths detailed how high schoolers and middle schoolers on the island are “really struggling” with issues, including poor mental health, substance abuse and loneliness, in a presentation to Kaua‘i County Council members this week.

Mosquito suppression pilot project to save Kaua‘i forest birds concludes

LIHU’E — A team of researchers working to prevent the extinction of Hawai‘i’s endangered forest birds through the release of incompatible mosquitoes in Koke‘e are set to conclude a 10-day pilot project on Saturday, Nov. 4. The project is part of a nearly $7 million per year state plan to decimate mosquito populations, in an effort to stop the spread of avian malaria and give the birds a chance at survival.

Surfrider report finds bacteria present in Kaua‘i waters

LIHU’E — A scientist at the Surfrider Foundation’s Kaua‘i Chapter has released the organization’s monthly results of pollution levels at different streams, rivers and surf spots around the island, and about one-third of the sites tested showed a high presence of bacteria.

Kaua‘i man pleads guilty to multiple charges

LIHU‘E — A Kaua‘i man with a decades-long criminal history pleaded guilty on Tuesday to charges involving vehicle theft, criminal trespassing, attempting to escape police custody and assault of two police officers.
