Nellie Joyce Okamoto
Nellie Joyce Okamoto, of Princeville, went to heaven on May 19, 2025, at Wilcox Hospital at the age of 69 following a long battle with cancer. She retired as a high school counselor at Kapaa High School after nearly 40 years of service. Nellie cared for her students and affectionately called them “my kids.” She consistently made time for them and helped them in any way possible, always lending a sympathetic ear. Over the years, Nellie counseled thousands of students and advocated for them to further their education in 4-year colleges, 2-year colleges or trade schools, and guided them towards securing scholarships.
She was born and raised in Honolulu, graduated from Kaimuki High School, and subsequently earned a Master’s Degree in Counseling from the University of Hawaii. In 1986, she married her husband, Charles Okamoto, and moved to Kauai to raise their family.
Nellie was preceded in death by her parents Harold and Elsie Joyce, and her in-laws Jiro and Mildred Okamoto.
She is survived by her husband Charles Okamoto, daughter Kelli Okamoto, son Chas Okamoto, brothers Harold (Rosa) Joyce of Gardena, California and Darryl (Linda) Joyce of Lanai, brothers-in-law Alan Okamoto of Kamuela and Brian Okamoto of Wailua Houselots, sister in-law Grace (Thomas) Yamashita of Kapolei, Aunty Thelma Souza, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Private services were held.
Sigrid Elizabeth Raquel
Sigrid Elizabeth Raquel, of Kapaa, passed away on April 1, 2025, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 73. She was born on Nov. 30, 1951, in Ansbach, Germany. She was a retail meat cutter.
She was preceded in death by parents Johann and Elizabeth Boas, siblings Dieter Boas and Christa Boas Durr.
She is survived by her son Jerry R. (Jackie) Raquel of Kapaa, brothers Walter Boas of Germany and Norbert Boas of Germany, sister Dora Hammer of Germany, two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Garden Island Mortuary assisted the family with arrangements.
Lexington Alexander Kahanuola Iokua Cortez
Lexington Alexander Kahanuola Iokua Cortez, an infant, passed away on May 25, 2025. He was born on May 25, 2025.
He is survived by his parents Will and Jenna Cortez, great-grandparents Mauricio “Papi” and Elsy “Mami” Cortez, Manolo “Lolo” Paiso, grandparents Dennis “DC” and Lynn Cummings, Will and Anne Marie Cortez, aunty and uncles, Kasie Cummings, Cubby Cortez, Nadia Gomez and Steven Gomez.
A private celebration of life will be held.
