Dear Doug,
It’s my birthday this Saturday. I’m looking in the mirror … and reflecting on my life. I’ve officially crossed the 50-yard line, yet again. Can you feel my pain? Do you have a dose of inspiration to douse my perspiration?
Your friend, Joe Six-Pack, Kalaheo
Hau‘oli la hanau, Joe! I trust that this one will be celebrated in health, and with hope.
As we ripen into our vintage selves here on the Garden Island, I do have a few thoughts on how to feel younger than you look, and look younger than you feel.
The problem isn’t age, it’s how we define it. And, “chronologically” doesn’t even make the list. By this time next year, I pretty much guarantee that you’ll be a lot younger than you are today.
1. Mirror, mirror, on the wall …
Doing an about-face on the sands of time begins with a hardy physique and a healthy glow. Physical exercise and nutritive fitness are the proverbial Fountains of Youth, even near the wettest spot on Earth.
Speaking of Kauai … we are positioned almost 50 percent farther south than Florida is to New York. In other words, respect the sun here, my friend. Wear reef-safe sunscreen, a huge goofy hat, and UV-blocking sunglasses. Try to avoid the “leather weather” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to help you look marvelous in years to come, and the decades that follow.
2. Out of the mouth, the heart speaks …
“Hung by the Tongue” is a great book. Our brain is always listening, even when we’re shouting and pouting or mumbling and grumbling. Mental messaging dictates aging mentally.
“Malama ‘aina” means “take care of the land, and it will take care of you.” Similarly, plant youthful thoughts in your mind, and your whole being will blossom. Speak life into what you want, not what you want to escape. A song in your heart with a smile in your voice translates to a spring in your step. Radiate vibrant, optimistic, youthful positivity!
3. Half your age in half the time …
Are you 52 or 26? Physiological age is probably the best indication of your “real” age, at any age. It’s what’s on the inside that counts, right? Imagine being tested by your neighborhood exercise physiologist. BP: 112/68. HR: 47. Body Fat: 12 percent. VO2max: 54 ml/kg/min. Et cetera.
My analysis? You’re at the top of your game, braddah, whether you are 50, or 20, or any age in between. Super Strength, Stamina, Stretching and Sustenance are maintaining your youthful abilities and agilities. As you know, aging is based on activity, or inactivity. It doesn’t take as long as you think … perhaps not even half as long as you think.
4. Cultivating your childlike capacities …
Emotional maturity begins with recreational immaturity, on purpose and with purpose. Laugh more. Sulk less. Dance crazy. Watch cartoons. Dream big. Make movies!
The older we get, the more we talk about dreams dashed. Move forward! Live in the now, not in nostalgia.
Find something new to embrace, and then unwrap it like a kid on Christmas morning.
5. Keep your friends close, and closer …
All time is precious and some people stress us. Surround yourself with the young-at-heart, regardless of age. Volunteer with kids. Mentor someone. Laugh with locals. If you’re the oldest, be the boldest. You’ve got the miles to share the most smiles.
Mend what matters. Heal distant friendships and restore silent relationships. Release the peace.
6. Father knows best …
When it comes to testosterone, and the design of its decline, please trust the Great Physician. Granted, being “Mr. T” has its advantages. However, boosting hormones that grow more muscle may also impact the proliferation of cancer cells. Exercise caution.
And, exercise regularly. Training smart, sleeping deep, and eating clean boosts and balances testosterone naturally. Trust the arc, and its gradual incline and decline.
7. Leaving blessings and bread crumbs …
Leaving a lasting impact is being forever young. The next generation needs trails of wisdom, in attitude and action.
Consider your bountiful breadcrumbs … the lessons, the love, the laughter and the legacy. Create a wake of blessings behind you, making it easier for those who follow to cast their burdens behind, as well.
True youthfulness isn’t about appearances, whether physical or fiscal. It’s about living with intention, love, purpose and faith. Starting today, leave nothing unsaid, unloved or unfinished.
Happy birthday to my best friend of half my life, Joe. May this be your best year ever. Flip the script, literally. The past has passed; your future is the present … and what a gift it is!
