Artist Monika Mira said on Saturday that she still needs to build the tunnel out of marine debris for the Kauai Society of Artists’ Washed Up Marine Debris Art Show.
“It’s like people coming through marine debris to see the exhibit,” Mira said. “‘Washed Up’ opens on June 7, co-sponsored by the Surfrider Foundation. We have the artists’ reception on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the KSA gallery.”
The art exhibit, which is celebrating its seventh year, is just just one of several events at Kukui Grove that celebrates World Ocean Day on Saturday from 10 a.m. Washed Up is available for viewing daily through June 27 at no charge. The KSA gallery is open daily from noon.
Showtime Characters will have its mermaids available for visits with keiki, and Brenda Turville said she’ll have the ocean-themed backdrop available for at least two weeks because of Ocean Day.
The Ocean Discovery Center has a menu of fun and learning for the entire family, including make and take crafts, games and displays, including a Hokulea keiki waa with Steve Soltysik who has information on wayfinding, navigation by stars, and more.
“The Kauai Endangered Seabird Project, one of the Kauai Ocean Discovery partners, will be teaching about making seabird puppets, games and displays,” said Jean Souza, the on-site Kauai Ocean Discovery manager. “Kumu Kaeo Bradford and her friends will have some Hawaiian crafts, the Kauai Ocean Discovery volunteers will be working with the jigsaw puzzles, gyotaku fish prints, and spinning the ‘Whale of Fortune.’”
The Pacific Ocean connects Kauai and all the Hawaiian Islands with New Zealand and other Pacific destinations. On Saturday, Kumu Hula Kapu “Aunty Kapu” Kinimaka Alquiza and halau Na Hula O Kaohikukapulani will present a special hula performance starting at 11 a.m.
June 8 is the observed World Ocean Day, and the Outrigger Kauai Beach Resort invites everyone to a day of World Ocean Day related activities, including sustainable vendors, local food, live music and even a beach cleanup focusing on microplastics. Events take place at the Nukolii resort’s oceanfront lawn area back of the pool from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
World Ocean Day, according to the World Ocean Day website, unites and rallies the world to protect and restore our blue planet.
Since starting ans an idea in 2002, World Ocean Day has grown to thousands of events, and millions of people participating each year. The World Ocean Day network includes more than 2,000 organizations in 180 countries.
