KILAUEA — Some of the student recipients of scholarships could not be present during the Saturday awards presentation because for them, school was still in session, according to members of the Zonta Club of Hanalei.
The Zonta Club of Hanalei Foundation distributed $32,000 in scholarships to 15 students from Waimea to the North Shore.
Students receiving awards graduated from all three public high schools as well as Island School. Others are currently in college or universities.
Island School graduate Mary Magoun was the recipient of the special $3,000 Kirsten Salmon Award for Nursing. Kauai Community College graduate Ciaralan Tolentino, who will attend the University of Hawaii-Hilo with a major of marine biology in the fall, earned the Hunt Foundation Environmental Science Award that comes with a $3,000 scholarship.
The remaining scholarship recipients earned $2,000 Zonta Club of Hanalei awards.
Joining Magoun and Tolentino, the scholarship recipients include Kendra Suga (Waimea HS), Amalia Abigania (Kauai HS), Michaela Alcaraz (Kauai HS), Kanoe Haneberg (Kapaa HS), Rain Hannsz (Kapaa HS), Chloe Hannsz (Kapaa HS), Kaori Koerte (Chaminade), Katin Lambden (University of Utah), Hailey Martinez (Kauai HS), Shyloh McCann (UCLA), Kealohilani Molina (Kamehameha Schools), Lyla Nakayama (Island) and Taylee Yamamoto (Waimea HS).
Since starting its Scholarship Program in 2009, the Zonta Club of Hanalei Foundation has provided more than $300,000 in scholarships to the community’s talented, motivated and inspiring young women of Kauai.
The Zonta Club of Hanalei Foundation is able to provide these scholarships through fundraising and generous donations from North Shore citizens, to which we are eternally grateful, said a Zonta Club of Hanalei member.
