NAWILIWILI — The Training Ship Golden Bear will arrive at Nawiliwili Harbor on Saturday morning, and the public is invited to tour the ship while it is docked there.
Kauai native Brant Tanaka, currently employed with the Norwegian Cruise Lines’ Spirit of America, arranged with the Golden Bear’s Jessica Fowler, assistant to the Captain of TSGB, to arrange public access to the ship.
The 500-foot TS Golden Bear is scheduled to arrive at 8 a.m. on Saturday, and the public is invited to tour the ship from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. The tours continue on Sunday and Monday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.
Tanaka is an alumnus of Cal Maritime. TS Golden Bear serves as the primary training platform for Cal Maritime, where cadets can apply technological skills they learned in the classroom. The cadets also use leadership skills acquired from their work assignments and responsibilities with the Corps of Cadets.
Each summer, cadets in their first and third years depart with licensed faculty officers for two months during the Summer Sea Term. During these periods at sea, intellectual learning, applied technology, and leadership development blends daily as cadets apply what they have learned in the classroom, lab, Corps, and waterfront.
The California State University Maritime Academy, or Cal Maritime for short, is a unique and specialized California State University system campus. Located on a scenic waterfront campus in Vallejo, California, it is the only one of seven degree-granting maritime academies in the country on the West Coast.
